The Dickson Park grandstand is expected to be complete in the spring.

The historic Dickson Park grandstand, which has overseen former major leaguer's like Rob Ducey and Scott Thorman plying their trade, won't be complete by the end of 2023 as originally anticipated.

Instead, restorations will continue with the completion date being extended to the spring.

The good news is the work is currently under budget.

With a project cost amount of $1,284,000.00, it's set to come in $116,000 under the original estimate.

"The project remains ongoing and is nearing completion," Olu Ojikutu, director of risk and facilities management for the City of Cambridge said.

"All structural works and roof replacement have now been completed. We anticipate that the final phase of the project will be completed in the spring of 2024."

Part of the reason for the delay, according to Ojikutu, was unpredictable weather causing the postponement of painting, which is one of the last jobs that needs to be done.

The entire scope of work for the 104-year-old structure included a roof replacement, steel framing, painting, wood bleacher replacement where necessary, retaining walls, perimeter wall "elastometric" coating and railings.

In order to begin the project, the city needed to obtain a heritage permit requiring an alteration to Part V of the Ontario Heritage Act. The structure was designated under the act in 2005 as part of the Dickson Hill Heritage Conservation District.

Some maintenance work was done in 1997 and any major improvements are based on the period circa 1871 in order to enhance its sense of history and landscape.

The project went before the Municipal Heritage Advisory Committee on Nov. 17, 2022 and city council on Jan. 31, 2023 before the heritage permit was issued.
