Darren Woods and Karen Bagg of the Cambridge Salvation Army are in the midst of collecting donations for its Backpack and School Supply Drive.

It may only be July, but Darren Woods and his team at The Salvation Army are already thinking ahead to how they can support students in need this coming school year.

The local organization is running its annual Backpack and School Supply Drive to ensure as many youth as possible are set up for success come September.

In his two years helping with the drive, Woods has seen the need in the community rise.

"Demand is increasing," he said.

"Last year we handed out supplies to 320 kids and we expect it to be higher this year. My guess is we'll serve 400."

The Salvation Army makes its projections based on the use of its other services.

The number of people accessing its food bank, for instance, is also rising.

Backpacks, pencils, pencil cases, pens and highlighters are just a few of the items that can be donated and will be distributed to students in junior kindergarten all the way through Grade 12.

With two kids of his own, Woods sees firsthand how costly preparing for the new school year can be.

"I know the expense of going to get these things," he said.

"We realize a lot of people we work with can’t afford to buy supplies. We try to meet that need and fill the gap."

Every year, Woods is overwhelmed by the response from the families who receive them.

It's typically a combination of people being thankful and a sense relief, he said.

"The response from our clients is always one of gratitude," he said.

"We have parents who are in tears because they didn’t know how they would get these items for their kids. They're always tremendously grateful."

The drive is continuing until September, with distribution to local families beginning during the final two weeks of August.

Anyone willing to donate can drop off supplies at 63 Water St. S or call 519-623-1221 to arrange delivery.
