A new sports facility in Cambridge is one step closer to getting shovels in the ground.

Tuesday night, Cambridge City Council approved handing the Fountain Street Soccer Complex contract to Gateman-Milloy Inc. of Kitchener.

The $11.7-million contract will include the construction of the outdoor sports facility on the corner of Fountain Street and Linden Drive.

Some highlights include, sports lighting, high-performance artificial turf and premium natural turf soccer field installation.

Council also invested some cash towards the upcoming PGA Canada Tour event at Deer Ridge Golf Club in September.

A $5,000 sponsorship was approved and it will come from the Municipal Accommodation Tax Reserve Fund.

Staff predict the economic impact of the event will be between $2-4 million dollars, benefiting local hotels, restaurants and stores.
