City of Cambridge rescinds eviction notice for Branchton Road encampment

After trying to evict an encampment near Branchton Road, the city has decided to end its two-month long eviction effort

The City of Cambridge has officially rescinded an eviction notice of an encampment near Branchton Road and Dundas Street.

The camp that once housed up to 12 people at once is safe from eviction, at least for the time being.

"Although we do not know the city’s reasons for making this decision, it appears the city is following the guidance set out by the Superior Court," said Ashley Schuitema, staff lawyer at Waterloo Region Community Legal Services in a press release.

The local legal group has been representing two members of the encampment since late March.

After a last-minute effort to save the camp, the residents were saved from being evicted by a same day decision to prevent the camp's removal.

The city has now decided to end their current battle for any further action against the residents.

More to come.
