Display cases and artifacts in the Cambridge Sports Hall of Fame were damaged on Dec. 1.

The Cambridge Sports Hall of Fame will be closed for an undetermined amount of time after several display cases were smashed on Dec. 1.

Around noon, Waterloo regional police responded to a report of a person causing damage to the property inside the storefront in the Cambridge Centre mall.

Police located and arrested a 33-year-old male and charged him with mischief under $5,000 and public nudity.

The man was held for a bail hearing.

Dave Menary, co-founder and communications director for the hall of fame, said several large and small display cases were smashed, while artifacts were damaged and displaced.

"All told about six or seven display cases were severely damaged," Menary said.

"We have not yet estimated the cost of repairing the cabinets. We are waiting for our insurer to assess the damage but it is safe to say it is in the thousands of dollars."

A committee meeting is being held tomorrow and Menary said dealing with the situation is a high priority, with next steps being to "clean up the area, replace the glass, and re-establish our displays and exhibits in a secure fashion."

A social media post shared by Menary on behalf of the hall of fame said it will reopen when it is safe to do so.

"The damage is being assessed and repairs will be made in due course," the statement read.

"Because of safety concerns and the security of our sports memorabilia and artifacts, we are unable to reopen until all repairs are made."

The Cambridge Sports Hall of Fame is a not-for-profit organization run by volunteers with a mission of honouring and inducting outstanding individuals, teams and builders to promote the local sports scene.
