Soroptimist International of Cambridge held their 10th annual International Women's Day event last year.

The Soroptimist International of Cambridge is planning a fun-filled event celebrating International Women's Day (IWD) on Saturday, March 8.

The theme of this year's event is "accelerate action for gender equality."

The free event will kick off at 12:30 p.m. with a walk through the downtown Galt from city hall to the University of Waterloo School of Architecture, where the celebration will continue indoors with a keynote speaker to be announced shortly.

"It's a great opportunity to connect with like-minded individuals and celebrate the achievements of women around the world," says the club.

Purple is the official colour of IWD and everyone is encouraged to express their support by wearing something purple.

The event is in support of our community partners the Cambridge Food Bank and the YWCA Cambridge, which welcomes donations of femine hygeine products.

Registration for the day begins at city hall, 50 Dickson St., where participants will meet up and connect with other event walkers. Signs will be available to carry during the walk down Wellington Street to Main Street, then across the bridge to Melville Street.

Participants will stop on the bridge for some photos and cheers.

The group expects more than 100 like-minded supporters to the celebration which will continue indoors at the UW campus.

"Welcome remarks and our inspiring keynote speaker will leave you empowered to do your part to ACCELERATE ACTION for gender equality."

The Soroptimists will also present the YWCA Cambridge with a donation for the Cambridge Women's Emergency Homeless Shelter and Envision Education Grants to Women in Skilled Trades sponsored by the Soroptimist Trust.

More details about the event are available on the group's registration page.
