Waterloo regional councillor Karl Kiefer will not seek re-election in Cambridge in the upcoming municipal election slated for October.
Kiefer has served on Waterloo Regional Council for the past two terms and before his time representing Cambridge at Waterloo Regional Council, he served as councillor in the Preston area of Cambridge for 23 years.
In a press release issued Wednesday, he says he believes now is time for other community members to have the opportunity to lead.
“The world is changing and evolving and so we need our ideas and our policies to do the same. I am excited and hopeful for the future because I know we have so many bright young minds capable of leading our community,” Kiefer said.
"I want individuals with ideas and, specifically, underrepresented individuals to have the opportunity to step forward and lead.”
Kiefer has been a mainstay on the local political scene for three decades.
Reflecting on his time on council, Kiefer noted that he will continue to be available to offer his experience to the community and anyone new that wants to be involved in public service.
“We are privileged to live in one of the greatest places on earth right here in Cambridge and in Waterloo Region,” he emphasized.
Kiefer further reflected by conveying, “I am so grateful to my parents for bringing me to Canada as a child and it has been the honour of a lifetime to give back to my community. I am eager to help and share my experiences with those who want to lead in the future.”
While he believes public service is imperative, Kiefer says he looking forward to spending more time with his family and grandchildren.
“I will always be proud of my community, but I am also proud of my family. After 30 years of my family supporting my public service commitment, I look forward to sharing more time together with them.”
