Cambridge native Stacey Kay won over the judges on Canada's Got Talent on Tuesday, getting a "golden buzzer" from Canadian music legend Kardinal Offishall.
On last night's episode of the popular talent show, the Cambridge singer performed a rendition of “Lady Marmalade” by soul music pioneer, Patti LaBelle.
Her powerful voice had the judges shocked, but one of them recognized her from her time on a past game show.
“I am an idiot!” said Howie Mandel after realizing he had cut her from a previous season of America’s Got Talent five years prior.
“Let's show the rest of the world what we got, and we got you,” said Mandel.
When she was in America, a record label told her what she needed to do to become successful.
“The advice that they gave me was to lose 100 pounds, change the colour of my hair and to sing love songs like Adele and just calm down,” said Kay
She felt like she was unable to be her true self with this label, wanting her to change every aspect of who she is.
Now being a contestant on the Canadian variety show, she said feels free to be 100 per cent her authentic self.
She blew away the judges and earned a standing ovation.
Offishall said he is "unsure" if Kay’s performance should win something like Canada’s Got Talent, but after that comment earned boos and jeers from the crowd he stood up to clarify.
“Like I said, I’m not sure… I am absolutely positive!” he exclaimed while slamming his hand on the golden buzzer.
Gold confetti rained down on the Cambridge musician and her band as they jumped for joy.
With the golden buzzer, Kay and her team now have a guaranteed spot in one of the live semi-finals of the show, which airs on City Television.
