Waterloo Regional Police Chief Bryan Larkin announced his retirement from the service last Thursday

One week after he announced he would be retiring from Waterloo Regional Police, we are learning more about Bryan Larkin's new role with the Royal Canadian Mounted Police.

The RCMP said Larkin will take over as deputy commissioner, Specialized Policing Services (SPS).

He will replace Deputy Commissioner, Stephen White, who retired last week.

SPS is responsible for providing frontline operational support services in areas such as forensic analyses, firearms, criminal records and combating child sexual exploitation.

Specialized Policing Services also looks after the stewardship and delivery of National Police Services.

Larkin, who has been chief of Waterloo Regional Police since 2014, announced his retirement from the service last Thursday.

A transition date still needs to be worked out between Larkin and the local police services board.

An interim chief will also be named ahead of his departure.
