A city engineer has determined Black Bridge is safe for vehicle crossings after an accident involving an over-height truck shut down the single-lane bridge for a day.
The city closed Blackbridge Road near Townline Road last Friday after an 18-wheel tractor trailer struck one ot the overhead trusses.
The height limit on the bridge is 3.1 metres. The standard height of an 18-wheeler is about 4.1 metres.
An inspection Friday night determined the damage is superficial and further assessment and scheduling of any required repair work will be completed at a later date.
The Black Bridge was constructed in 1916 and, according to Canada's Historic Places, was recognized for its cultural value, interest and construction.
It is the only steel bridge of its kind in Cambridge and will be preserved as a multi-use trail crossing of the Speed River when the city builds an adjacent two lane bridge.
