CambridgeToday received the following letter about the recent spate of commemorative plaques throughout the community.

I am writing to express my deep disappointment in the recent rash of thefts of commemorative plaques across our community.

These treasured plaques pay tribute to people and events that helped shape our community.

The latest theft - the plaque at ParkHill Dam honouring the memories of Waterloo Region Police Const. David Nicholson and Mark Gage - was most disheartening.

The tragic event of August 1998 is forever etched in the memories of many Cambridge residents. Const. Nicholson lost his life during a valiant effort to save young Mark. Together, our community hoped for days for a successful end to the search and rescue effort. In the end, we mourned alongside their families and friends.

The monument at Parkhill Dam was a sacred spot where our community could gather to remember Mark and Const. Nicholson. It’s unacceptable that someone saw fit to take that away.

The crime committed at Parkhill Dam comes on the heels of the theft of commemorative bronze plaques from Victoria Park and Dalton Court Parkette. In my view, these thefts are deeply hurtful and disrespectful of our city’s proud history.

I urge anyone with information about these thefts to contact police.
