CambridgeToday received the following letter to the editor from Dan Clements, member of Citizens for Cambridge:

We are writing to express enthusiastic support for Kitchener Mayor Berry Vrbanovic's recent comments about the new Canada Public Transit Fund and its positive implications for the Cambridge light rail transit (LRT) extension. His comments provide a clear and hopeful vision for our region’s transit future, contrasting sharply with Regional Councillor Doug Craig's skepticism.

Mayor Vrbanovic rightly celebrates the announcement of the Canada Public Transit Fund as a transformative milestone for public transit in Canada. The promise of $3 billion annually over the next decade is critical for Waterloo Region to expand our transit infrastructure and support sustainable urban growth.

One of the most compelling points in Mayor Vrbanovic’s comments is the emphasis on the direct benefits for the whole Waterloo Region. The extension of the LRT from Fairview Mall in Kitchener to Cambridge will enhance connectivity, spur economic growth, and promote environmental sustainability. The stable financial backing provided by the new fund addresses one of the major hurdles on such large-scale projects.

Councillor Craig’s concerns about the sufficiency of the $30 billion fund and the potential for political shifts impacting its longevity are understandable. However, these concerns should not overshadow the immediate opportunities the fund presents. The availability of $20 million right away for planning major expansions is a significant step forward. Hopefully by seeking and obtaining this initial funding, our region can expedite completion of a robust, shovel-ready proposal that stands a better chance of securing further investment.

Furthermore, our region has been initiative-taking in meeting the criteria for funding eligibility by eliminating mandatory parking minimums and promoting high-density housing along transit routes. These efforts demonstrate our readiness to capitalize on the available funds and move forward with essential transit projects.

In addition, the comprehensive approach of the Public Transit Fund, with its three funding streams, ensures a balanced allocation of resources across various transit needs. This includes maintaining existing systems, supporting metro-region expansions, and making targeted investments in rural and Indigenous communities. Such a holistic strategy not only supports our Cambridge LRT extension but also addresses broader transit needs within our community.

Waterloo Region’s commitment to advancing transit projects is evident in the ongoing efforts to develop a business case for the Stage 2 LRT and the GO Transit passenger rail line between Cambridge and Guelph. These projects, coupled with the planned $100 million transit hub in Kitchener, reflect a strategic and forward-thinking approach to enhancing our transit infrastructure.

In conclusion, while councillor Craig highlights the competitive nature of securing transit funds, it is crucial to focus on the initiative-taking measures and strong planning already in place in our region. The Canada Public Transit Fund is a remarkable opportunity to advance our transit goals, improve connectivity, and promote sustainable urban development.

Hopefully, Waterloo Region continues to forge ahead with optimism and leadership. We urge our community to embrace this transformative opportunity with confidence.
